A week to go...

The MTN Zone at the Barnyard Theatre

Your cycling home for the race will be the MTN Zone at the Barnyard Theatre. This is where you will register on Friday. Opening early (6:00) until late, this will be the place to meet friends and family and recover after the days ride. Pre ride coffee, breakfasts, light meals, a bar, bike mechanics, the massage therapists and our daily race briefings all happen here.

ER24 First/Aid Paramedic Facility

The ER24 professional paramedics will be providing the first aid and paramedic services both on and off the course. Their base will be at the finish and they can be consulted if you have any medical problems on your return from each stage on days 1 -3. They will have at least two vehicles on the long stages to attend to any mishaps or accidents/injuries which may occur. During the time trial they will also have 2 vehicles on the route in strategic areas. Thus it is vital that you ensure that your Medical Aid details are up to date on our database and that you wear your medic alert band.

Emergency numbers will be printed on your race number so it is recommended that you have at least one cell phone per team. The number is 084 124 and this can be entered on your phone as well.

Massage Facility

A massage facility will be provided at the MTN Zone from 11h00 on days 1&3 and 10:00 on day 2 by highly experienced cycling massage therapists. Bookings for this service can be made by phoning Elana on 082 499 7590 or at registration on Friday 25th April. Pre-bookings are recommended but the team will make times available for walk in massages. Costs are R95 for a half hour.

There is a physiotherapist also available if you need these specific services. She will be based with the massage therapists at the MTN Zone at the Barnyard but you will be required to pre-book sessions with her. She will be able to do strapping, needling, laser and . Her charge is R110 per session. Contact Puveshni on 082 565 2604.

Race Timing & Seeding

Great Time will be doing our timing again. You will not need any timing chip but must ensure that your number is very visible on your back. In terms of seeding, the race employs its own unique version for the first stage.

An initial seeding for the Panorama Tour is only done for Stage 1, -for Stages 2,3 and 4 your accumulated total time will determine your start zone. As there is also a neutral zone at the start of each stage, combined with batch start times for each group, Stage 1 start zone seeding is not that critical. As in 2007, initial seeding will be based mainly on your previous results on the last 2 Panorama Tours [50%], combined with your requests and motivations submitted [25%] by latest Friday 18th April 2008 and as assessed against similar cycling event results by the organizers [25%]. This provisional start zone seeding will be posted at registration, and riders will still have an opportunity at that time to request and motivate an adjustment.

Send your request for seeding to the race office : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Rider Get together - Monday 28th April

We will have our traditional get together on the Monday evening at the Barnyard immediately after race briefing. There is only the 20km to race the next day, so by then you should be feeling more relaxed. The meal is included in the rider entry fee. Tickets for family and friends will be for sale at Registration at R50 per person. If you have a special meal request (eg vegetarian, halaal etc), please notify Sandy at registration or via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). Also, please confirm your attendance at the meal when you register.

Pre-Ride Coffee and breakfasts

The Barnyard/MTN Zone will be open from 6:00 each morning with coffee and muffins as a pre-ride caffeine and carb fix. This is also available for non-riders, who can also sample a cooked breakfast from 9:00 onwards. Zannas across the road will open at 6:00 to serve their famous coffees too.

There is also a Sunday lunch special (R59.95) at the Farm Kitchen located at the MTN Zone. Pick up all the details at registration.

Race Route

The race route is in pretty good condition in most places except the Kiepersol stretch on Stage One. However, there is still a lot of crushed glass. We strongly advise taking a patch kit as well as your tubes to be on the safe side. If you puncture, take the time to thoroughly inspect your tyre.

There will be an opportunity to put spare wheels in some of the official vehicles. These are the Commissaires and the Sweep vehicles. Stage One is probably the most tricky in terms of hitting a pothole and buckling a rim. You may place an extra wheel in a vehicle clearly marked with your team name and number. The vehicles will travel along the route - two initially close to the front bunches and the sweeps middle to back of the field. If you have a major problem, you can use your cell phone to contact the vehicle to bring your wheel (number to be provided). You will need to give the driver your position in terms of kilometres completed. The vehicle will also have a pump and a few tubes.

Note: The driver is not a mechanic. Any wheel changes or mechanical repairs will have to be done by yourselves. You may have to wait 20 minutes for the driver to get there but at least you will be still an official team if you complete the stage. Please do not expect "Tour de France" service vehicles or response times. Any abuse of the driver will be dealt with strictly.

Very Important – you may not receive assistance from outside vehicles. This will lead to penalties and disqualification. Make sure you are self sufficient in every way.

Bike Shop

Xtreme Sports will be in attendance for any last minute bike issues you may have. They will be present at registration from 15:00 to 18:00 and every morning at the MTN Zone from 6:00 to 7:30. They will also be there each afternoon from 15:30 until late if your bike needs fixing or servicing after a long day out.

On time trial day, they will be there from 6:00 until the last start time. Contact Brett on (013) 757-0161 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss any of your cycling needs especially if your bike does not conform to the norm.
