McLean, Cronje achive perfect record - just

Andrew McLean and Graham Cronje of Team Cycle Lab Toyota completed the 2008 MTN Panorama Tour with a perfect record on Tuesday when they won the final 20km time trial stage in White River and claimed the overall victory.

But the pair of veterans had to dig deep to claim their fourth successive stage win over the short, hilly out-and-back course, which saw the Standard Bank Tandem duo of Ian Martin and Chris Frankiskos putting up a strong challenge. McLean and Cronje clocked a quick 26min35sec with Martin and Frankiskos just seven seconds back in 26:42, securing their third stage win in the tandem division. Third place overall on the stage went to the TCS Broken Like Barend pair of Barend Burger and Pieter Henning, who also secured the Open’s men’s title.

“We knew this would be the toughest stage to win because a tandem on this course is such an advantage,” said McLean afterwards. “But we just put everything into the stage and just hoped that we’d gain enough back on the climbs to be able to beat the tandems.”

Also achieving four out of four stage wins and the overall women’s title were the MTN 1 team of Amoryn Saayman and Carla Rowley. They clocked 34:06, 39 seconds faster than The Eco-Analysts pair of Karen Southgate and Adele Ambrose with the Standard Bank duo of Lisa Vermaak and Liefie Day securing third in 34:59.

Another team that secured all four stage wins was the Standard Bank Bring It On pair of Tijl van De Winkel and Joanna Hotchkiss who were the only Mixed team to break 31 minutes (30:15) on Tuesday, confirming their dominance in that category.

Claiming their first stage win on Tuesday was the Cape Town-based Sub-veteran Daikin Gu pair of John O’ Conner and Moolman Welgemoed, who were just a couple of hundredths of a second quicker than the Fullimput team of Roan Exelby and Donovan Jackson. Both teams clocked 28:08.

The time trial times confirmed that the Sub-veteran Men’s is the biggest and most competitive category with just five seconds separating first and fourth place! Third and fourth respectively were the Cycle Lab IMC duo of Paul Cordes and Jason Ward the Cycle Lab Supercycling pair of Danie Marais and Morne van Greuning. Both teams clocked 28:13, also separated by just hundredths of a second.

The other stage winners on Tuesday were the Filorga team of Ernest Horn and Andre Potgieter. They won three out of the four stages and also secured the Master Men’s overall title. The TCS Magical pair of Jaco Ferreira and An-Li Pretorius were just over a minute slower than Martin and Frankiskos on the final stage, but had enough time in hand to secure the overall tandem title for the tour.

McLean, a former professional, the current South African veteran champion and TV personality was full of praise for the event, which was rated South Africa’s best road cycling race in 2007 on the Bicycling magazine rating system.

“The MTN Panorama Tour is more of an event than a race. It is geared to cater for everybody and that is why it is such a success,” said McLean. “It is extremely well organised but I do think they need to have a category for the professionals in future. It will still be unique as it requires teams of two, and will allow the Average Joes a chance to mingle with the pros both on the bike and off it.”
